When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had to be induced this time because I was 9 days post my due date and had gestational diabetes. It was the first time in 5 pregnancies that I had to be induced. My midwife gently released my water bag. It took a while for the pressure waves to become regular and I first realized that labor was starting when my husband briefly left to go out for lunch, I felt my first real intense wave!

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The intense pressure waves when the baby is descending, can be overwhelming, remembering to breath and remain calm. Fortunately, my husband was right at my side throughout and was able to provide the support to help me through each wave.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Yoga, hypnobirthing, meditaion. I wish I rested more at the end though!

What surprised you about your birth?
That even though I was induced and nervous about it, I was able to have a completely natural birth. The surprising thing is that even though I have experienced birth 5 times, I am completely changed each time and each time is new in its own way. The birth of each of my children has been unique and changed me as a mother, and all of us, into a new family The wisdom that I have gained from birthing each one of my babies has been life changing. I have been able to see my vulnerabilities and strengths. I have seen the support of family and friends lift us up. My heart feels so very full and and thankful. The oxytocin is running high in our house. Our baby has brought much joy into our hearts and home. These are the days and moments that remind me of what this life is all about. So, when the house is messy, when I don't have time to cook, or I haven't showered, I will remember this. What matters is love, what matters is each other.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Definitely a hot shower and the jacuzzi! My husband also applying counter pressure to my lower back during pressure waves helped a lot too!
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I was so tired that I ended up on my Left side. I was planning on a half squat like how I delivered my 4th child, but wasn't up for it this time. However, I didn't tear, so it turned out great.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
It was love at first sight! A moment I will always remember.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Find a supportive provider who thinks natural birth is normal!! Hire a doula if you feel that will help you, educate yourself, listen to your body, take a lot of time to get out of your head and into your body. I think prenatal yoga is a great way to connect with yourself, your baby, and prepare your body for opening during birth.
