Yoga Helped Sydney Tune Her Breathing During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had some prelabor on and off for a few days, and was at 4cm on Friday, May 26th. I realized I was really in labor at 1:30am on May 28th, and it continued from there!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

By the end, I was so exhausted. I was surprised by how emotionally challenging it was to keep going at certain points. I had moments where I broke down in tears in my husbands or my mom's arms, just so defeated. Pushing was also so so difficult. I only pushed for 30 minutes, but it was so challenging!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Yoga, which helped me to be in tune with my breathing.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I was surprised I went so early, and honestly, that I was able to go natural. I knew that's what I wanted but I don't think I realized how strong my body was until I actually did it.

  • Have a good support system! Also, do your research. Understanding labor and birth and how your body was made to birth your baby really helps wrap your head around everything.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I used the peanut ball during contractions, which really helped me. My husband sat in front of me and my mom sat behind me, so I had a lot of support.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Sitting up in the hospital bed, legs held up.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Words can't even describe it. I felt so consumed with awe and love for him. It honestly felt like a supernatural and spiritual experience.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Have a good support system! I was ready to give in at around 8cm, and my mom and husband were so supportive and encouraging. They helped me remember what I wanted and how strong I was. Also, do your research. Understanding labor and birth and how your body was made to birth your baby really helps wrap your head around everything.
