When did you realize you were really in labor?
It was about 9:00 am and we had just finished unwrapping Christmas presents and eating Christmas breakfast. I had been having contractions for weeks, but they suddenly were 2 minutes apart and quite intense.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Mentally preparing and dealing with people who are discouraging. The actual birth wasn’t bad!

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I read a lot. Understanding labor and birth is key. I practiced breathing properly, while practicing staying relaxed and focused, stretched, stayed active, etc. I loved the Mama Natural Book, Ina May Gaskin’s Guide to Childbirth, and Hypnobirthing.

What surprised you about your birth?
This was my second. Both were natural, but my first took quite a bit longer. This birth was fast and I only pushed twice. The difference between the hospital (birthing on my back and being told when to push) and the birth center (being able to labor & birth the way I felt most comfortable) made all the difference. I was able to walk and stand until the final push, and was able to squat and push once! It was amazing!

You can do it! Educate yourself and trust your body. Definitely prepare and practice breathing properly.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Breathing properly, staying calm, positive and focused! I walked, and used support during each contraction to stop and rock my hips.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I stood until the final push and gave birth squatting!
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Incredible! Euphoric. It’s so amazing to finally get to meet the little person that you’ve anticipated for so long!

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
You can do it! Educate yourself and trust your body. Definitely prepare and practice breathing properly.
