What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
The mama natural online class was a huge help. Even though this was my second child, I still learned a lot via the class. Hearing that even mamas that are educated in natural childbirth still come to a point where they are not sure if they can do it but still are able to push through (no pun intended) was reassuring to me. Also, the idea of being vocal with low pitch sounds was very helpful to me during contractions.

What surprised you about your birth?
How quick this one was. My water broke around 6:30am, we were on the road at 7:05am and I gave birth to my daughter in the car at 7:25am! It was unbelievable but I delivered my own baby while my husband drove the car. I pulled her out on the third push and brought her straight up to my chest. She cried right away which was a relief. Simultaneously I felt the relief of pain and the rush of happiness and almost giddiness. As we pulled through a very busy intersection w the baby in my arms I laughed thinking if people in the surrounding cars looked over at me, they would do a double take. Everyone says the second delivery is quicker but I never thought it would be that quick! I truly think my daughter was helping me achieve my natural birth goal by making the process quicker so I wouldn’t be in pain for too long. After the chaos of arriving at the ED settled, my little one did the breast crawl and began nursing on her own. It was another wonderfully surprising moment for us.

Amazing! As soon as she was out I felt an instant pain relief and as soon as I heard her cry I felt an instant emotional relief.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Rubbing my lower back essentially on my hip bones and low tone vocalizations.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I delivered her sitting in the front seat of my car
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Amazing! As soon as she was out I felt an instant pain relief and as soon as I heard her cry I felt an instant emotional relief. Although having a natural childbirth means you feel all the pain, that rush I got after delivering her was worth it.
