When did you realize you were really in labor?
When I visited the doctor for my 39 week check up! I was dilated to 6cm and she sent me straight to the Birth Center.
-
What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
There was a period during early transition when I wasn't making any progress because the baby was poorly positioned. I was exhausted but could tell that he wasn't moving down and that was very discouraging.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Talk through my plan over and over with my husband/coach so that he knew what I really wanted for every phase of labor and delivery and could keep me focused and speak for me.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
How large my baby was! Small babies run in both sides of our family, and our firstborn was only 6lb, 6oz. This guy was 8lb, 3 oz! And I still managed to deliver naturally like I wanted.

Have a partner who absolutely knows what you want and can keep you on track and encourage you when you hit those inevitable difficult moments when it feels impossible. Know that those moments will pass and that you CAN do it if you really want.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Changing positions frequently, focusing on breathing deeply, and looking at my husband for reassurance.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
Rotating between lying on my side and on my back.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Amazing. There is no feeling to compare with that moment.
