When did you realize you were really in labor?
Realizing that my water had really broken was the first thing. I’d been sneeze peeing so my initial thought was that I’d reached a whole. We level of pregnant lady incontinence. Once it was clear that it was my water sloshing out of me things got real. About ten minutes after the first slosh of water the contractions kicked in good and strong.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
It was tempting to panic and lose control of my breathing. As long as I stayed calm and breathed low things were great. One of the trickier things was laboring in some odd positions to help my posterior baby turn. In the end he did turn and the hour I spent laboring head down, butt up really paid off.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Taking the Dr. Christopher’s birth prep formula made things pretty smooth. On the day I went into labor I had been really getting things done around the house (maybe that last burst of energy for cleaning should have been a sign?) and I was very grateful to have all the dishes and laundry done.

What surprised you about your birth?
How fast everything went. I hadn’t had anything more than some Braxton Hicks before my water broke. From the time my water broke until I was holding my baby - 6 hours! I had heard so many horror stories about the length of first time labors, so it was a big relief for it to move so quickly and smoothly.

It’s doable and worth it. My baby was so alert from the first moment I held him and my recovery has been great! I didn’t take any pain medicine after having him and I was running around a park a week and a half after delivering. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Really good breathing and just getting in the zone with the noises I was letting myself make - low and mouth wide. Also my midwife had this cool metal thing I held that pressed an acupressure point in my hand - that was great!

What position did you end up delivering in?
I was in a birth pool mostly sitting up with my feet on the opposite wall.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
So cool! I remember how his whole bottom fit in one hand and right away I could feel that for sure he was a boy. He was warm, squishy and wonderful.
