When did you realize you were really in labor?
When contractions were about 3 minutes apart for an hour. I had prodromal labor for 2 days so I was just used to the contractions and not really convinced that it was active labor until I woke my husband up at 2 am and he started timing them. At 5 am he said ok we have to get to the hospital.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging part was the mental confidence. I knew my body could physically handle it but my mind was trying to convince me I couldn't. I honestly didn't even have time to ponder not going natural as I walked into the hospital at 8 cm dilated.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
We took a natural childbirth class and we used a doula. Both were super beneficial for preparing me physically and mentally for natural childbirth. I also stayed very active throughout my pregnancy which helped as well.

What surprised you about your birth?
I was surprised how quick everything happened once we realized I was in actual labor. From time we got to hospital, baby Louise was born within 3 hours.

You can do it!! You are tougher than you think. And hire a doula!
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Massage! My husband would massage my lower back through the majority of my contractions at home.

What position did you end up delivering in?
On my back in the bed. I had pushed for a good hour on my side and was exhausted. Being on my back gave me a little relief to rest between pushes.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Unreal! I can't even describe the feeling because there are no words. After all the preparation and wondering if baby was girl or boy, I was overcome with relief that she was healthy, surprised she was a girl, and just so in love with our little perfect baby!
