When did you realize you were really in labor?
I was six days past my due date and am ultrasound showed low fluid levels. Because of this, my doctor and midwife advised induction. Luckily, one dose of cytotec on my cervix began labor and I was able to labor and deliver naturally.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
It hurts! It's tough to stay mentally on top of the pain but doable. My husband and doula kept me going by making me drink water, letting me take the lead with positions etc and getting me in water during transition. Their encouragement was crucial.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Hypnobirthing! My husband and I took a course and it really gave us the confidence we needed. This was my third baby and I felt way more in control this time. I never even thought about getting drugs this time!! With my other two births I went natural but struggled.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
It wasn't how I thought it would be because of the induction but we were able to get what we needed for a natural labor and delivery anyhow. Knowing what I wanted and being really confident in my capabilities allowed me to enjoy the experience. My husband got to be really involved and had the support of our doula too. I had the best support team! The miracle of holding your child never gets old...it was just beautiful. We met our healthy little girl and immediately knew that we had done the best we could and that she benefited from a natural pregnancy and delivery.

You can do it! Start preparing early and then listed the help of a partner. Hiring a Doula was the best investment we made. I would highly recommend finding someone you like and making them a part of your birth team.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Peppermint oil for nausea, warm tub during transition, birthing stool for pushing, hot compress in low back, lots of moving around.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
On the bed leaned on my side with legs pulled back.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Pure bliss! It was an immediate high to see, feel and hear her!

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
