When did you realize you were really in labor?
Our midwife gave had me take some start-up tinctures since my due date had long passed. I began contractions not long afterwards. It felt like period cramps at first but grew stronger in intensity and length. Our baby was born the following day, at exactly 42 weeks. We think that the due date was inaccurate, however.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The contractions were the most painful for me and actually getting her out was painless in comparison. However, I didn't know that during the contractions and I thought it was just going to get worse. Little did I know, it was all down hill from there. Having a supportive partner and great midwife definitely helped me get through it.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Prepare myself mentally, mostly to convince myself that my body was made for this and didn't need the help of drugs. Taking classes at our birthing center definitely was helpful. Also, keeping up with my health during the pregnancy. I walked a lot and continued to stay active as much as I felt was comfortable for my body. I felt I was in better shape for the delivery of our baby and to heal afterwards as well.

What surprised you about your birth?
It took longer than I expected! I was incredibly lucky with an easy pregnancy, I had hardly any discomfort or symptoms that bother most pregnant women. I think that tricked me into thinking I'd have an easy labor as well. Not really the case. It wasn't dreadful, but not as quick as I imagined it to be. Oh well!

Do your research and choose what's best for you. If you want to go natural but are hesitant, I say go for it and don't hold back unless you have a good reason to do so. If you're healthy and up for it, going natural is the most rewarding and empowering experience I can imagine.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Changing positions during contractions. Drinking a lot of water.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
Although I wanted a water birth, I felt most comfortable on the bed at the birth center. Once I began pushing on the bed, she was delivered soon afterwards.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Surreal. I was in disbelief she was finally in my arms. She was 2 weeks late and it felt like we had waited forever.
