When did you realize you were really in labor?
I started having contractions one week before I went into labor. Twice I had thought it might be time, but then everything stopped. I was at work the day I went into labor and had been having contractions steadily for about 2 hours before I headed to the hospital. Things moved really slowly until my midwife broke my water about 10 hours later. Then labor really started and I knew it wouldn't be long.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Because labor started really slowly for me, it was tough finding the mental energy to stay focused through the tougher contractions in the end. I had been awake for over 24 hours by the time baby arrived and I was exhausted. Handling the pain became more difficult as I became more tired.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I took a great childbirth education class before having my first son two years ago. I reviewed my class notes and breastfeeding information to prepare.
-

I was so surprised that it was all so different from my first son's birth. Every single part of it was unique and special.

Prepare the best you can by educating yourself and be flexible as your body may or may not do what you plan for.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Breathing loudly was my best strategy. I found it really helpful to moan and him through my exhales.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I ended up on my left side for delivery
I started in a more traditional sitting position in the bed, but my nurse thought baby might be posterior. As soon as I rolled into my side, he turned his head and I delivered him in just 3 pushes.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
So amazing and such a relief. All of the pain and struggle vanished once I had him in my arms.
