When did you realize you were really in labor?
With this being my first child, I had no idea what to expect when it came to labor pains. I started having minor contractions around 8:30 am, and by 11 am my labor had actually started. When my husband had our doula come over and she told us we needed to get to the birth house, I knew this was the real deal!

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
I had a few minor complications in my third trimester and almost had to have a hospital birth. I had read so many stories of hospitals administering medication without notifying the mother beforehand, it scared me to be put in that situation. Thankfully, I was able to stay at the birth center and even at the worst part of labor, I never even asked for any medication!

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I took BlissBorn classes to learn about meditation and self-hypnosis while pregnant. This played a huge part in controlling my body and mind during labor, and allowed me to have a natural, enjoyable birth experience.

What surprised you about your birth?
I was mostly surprised by how much happens after the actual birth. I hadn’t thought further than holding my daughter, but there is a lot that happens in the hours (and days) after the baby is born!

Go natural! The benefits far outweigh any possible pain. You never know what you can handle until you try!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
The self-hypnosis I learned with my BlissBorn classes allowed me to use my breaks between contractions to their fullest potential. Thinking affirmations and taking it one step at a time really helped me manage the pain.

What position did you end up delivering in?
I had to switch positions a few times, even while my daughter’s head was out, because her shoulders and chest got stuck. I believe that her head was delivered on my hands and knees, and her body was delivered while I was squatting. I could have that backwards, though! There was a lot going on.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Holding my baby for the first time was magical! Nothing compares to that feeling.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Go natural! The benefits far outweigh any possible pain. You never know what you can handle until you try!
