What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I took a birthing class with my husband and read several books. I also worked with my home birth midwife and our relationship really made a difference.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
I was surprised by how I coped through it. I was fierce, vocal, and strong. I had to let go of idealizing a call, peaceful birth and accept that a loud, powerful birth is also coping and just what I needed to birth my baby.

Breathe and try not to resist the pain! Don’t preoccupy yourself with how you are coping, just one contraction at a time, you will get through it and your baby will come!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Vocalizing, leaning on my midwives and my husband, and resting between contractions helped relieve pain.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
I immediately felt so much relief and excitement! It was a moment I will never forget- I became a mom and a new human was born!
-
What did you name your baby, and why?
Julian Robert. It was very important to us that his first name was easily pronounced in English and Spanish. His middle name is from my husband's father.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
