When did you realize you were really in labor?
Shortly after having lunch the contractions were about 4 minutes apart. Before that they were about every 45 minutes.
-
What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Since this was my fourth child, I knew the pain I was about to experience and I was starting to get nervous. But I knew just when I thought I could no longer handle the pain the baby would be out and in my arms.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Getting educated on as much as I could at having a baby. This helped me get mentally prepared for the big day and took a lot of the frightening aspect of the unknown out of the picture. Staying calm and staying in control of my thoughts also helped. It is so easy to start doubting your ability to labor and deliver a baby, especially drug free, but having a better idea of what to expect and knowing you can do it is such an encouragement.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
How fast it was. From the first real contraction to delivery was under three hours.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Breathing through each contraction and staying as relaxed as I could. Whenever I felt my hands, face or any body part tense up I would remind myself to relax and just shake it off. I also made sure I had a sip of water between each contraction.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
Somewhat on my side with one leg up.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
The emotions and beauty of holding your baby for the first time is almost indescribable. The pain is still strong and uncomfortable, your body is exhausted beyond belief, yet you are holding the most precious thing in the world and your heart is just filled with joy.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Believe in yourself and know that you can do it!
