When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had been having contractions all day long as I was running my errands. I called my midwife after I took a shower to take the edge off and update her on my progress. She advised me to take a bath to help my body relax more, so I did. After about five minutes in the tub, my bloody show appeared. I remember thinking, "Wow, this it. I'm really going to deliver our baby boy today!"

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
By far, the most challenging part was trying to concentrate on ANYTHING through the pain. Transitioning was an out of body experience for me. I have never ever felt pain like that before.I literally had to talk to myself out loud to remind myself to keep breathing at a steady pace.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Cleaning up during the early stages of labor was genius! It took my mind off of the contractions and it put me at ease knowing we would be coming home to a nice clean house.

What surprised you about your birth?
How quickly my birth progressed during the later stages through me for a loop! My husband and I had been excitedly planning a water birth since before we even conceived. When we made it to the birthing center, I was already 7 centimeters dilated. By the time my midwife finished with checking us in, assessing my progress and getting me to the room, it was just about time for me to push, and no time for my water birth.

I would say that anybody can do this. Don't let anyone discourage you from going natural. Women were literally built for this. It's not easy, but it can be done and it's worth it!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Squatting and having my husband apply pressure to my lower back was amazing! Also, the running water from the hot shower was magical.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I ended up delivering in the traditional upright position.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
It was surreal. I couldn't believe that after waiting so many years, months, hours and after all of the tears and hard work, this little person was finally here in my arms. It also felt extra special for him to literally grab hold of me immediately, like he just knew I'm the lady who will protect him forever
