When did you realize you were really in labor?
I'd been having irregular contractions for a few weeks, but they were unpredictable. My water broke early in the morning and my contractions immediately became strong and under 3 minutes apart.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging thing for me was getting my mind to agree with my body when it came time to push. My body 100% knew what to do and was doing it strongly. My mind was at a weak and tired point and I suddenly felt like I couldn't do it. My last birth was a c-section for a breech baby, so I was mentally prepared for labor sensations, but not the pushing. I had to dig deep to find the place where I truly believed that I could do it so my mind and body could work together to get my baby here.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I spent time praying about my birth and practicing breathing through stressful situations. I also spent time listening to MamaNatural's birth affirmations, worship music, and watching videos about natural birth.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
At one point while I was in transition, my midwife asked me to go from sitting to lying on my left side. I immediately began having hugely strong contractions and my body took over. My midwife announced I was at a 10. I couldn't believe how fast I went from being in control, focusing on my contractions and quietly breathing through them, to feeling like I couldn't finish the job. My body was pushing and I was unprepared for how sudden the change was. I was surprised to hear myself say that I couldn't do it and that I was done, but feeling my body have these powerful surges to push the baby out. It was incredible how strong my body was when my mind was feeling weak.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
I focused on deep breaths and on the lyrics of the worship music I had playing in my room. My doulas helped by using counter pressure on my back during some of my more intense contractions.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I delivered while laying on my left side.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
I was so relieved. The intensity of all of my contractions and the work of pushing culminated in a beautiful child in my arms. I felt strong and in awe of the whole birthing process. I had just achieved my VBAC and it all led to this miracle lying on my chest.
