When did you realize you were really in labor?
Unfortunately, I was induced due to my age. I hadn't already delayed the first recommending induction date. There were no health-related reasons other than my age as my blood work, BP and blood sugars were all wonderful. I had no swelling or aches to speak of. I should have resisted the second induction date.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
I went through the hours of endless contractions... yes endless. The induction medicine caused my contraction graph to read like a long connection of n's. There was no downtime. Ultimately, I had to get an epidural. My body was hypersensitive to the medicine. I couldn't be touched without it setting my nerves on fire. I was dry heaving due to the relentless contractions. It was strongly advised that I receive the epidural to stop the uncontrollable retching so I would be able to focus on pushing.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Reading helped me the most to prepare.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
The most surprising thing about birthing was how the baby shot out. The doctor was literally playing catch with my son!

-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Singing helped me the most. Those poor nurses will forever hate Mr SandMan.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
On my back with legs up due to the epidural. I had planned on being on my side.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Honestly, I expected more emotion but that still hasn't come. It was rather anticlimactic for me.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Be informed. Be your own advocate. Take all medical advice into consideration but ultimately you are in charge when things are going well.
