What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
My checklist. Researching EVERYTHING. Breathing techniques, getting a Doula, writing down birth affirmations, staying hydrated and nourished, understanding the stages of labor and what to expect and understanding that it’s good to have a plan BUT stay flexible because life is throws the unexpected at you.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
How strong I am. I didn’t know I was capable of the strength it took to push out that baby. I did it. As a first time mom, I chose a home birth and delivered my baby the way I desired.
-
Get a really good support team. Whether it’s your partner or a Doula, it’s so important to have people around you that are on your team. And do your research!!
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Doula/Partnered assisted stretches and hip squeezes, breathing techniques and verbal and physical support from my husband.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I labored in the tub for the majority of the labor but ended up delivering on my back, holding the back of my knees up on our mattress. It wasn’t what I wanted but it was needed due to the help I needed from the midwife.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Surreal. Foreign. Unbelievably wonderful.
