When did you realize you were really in labor?
That morning we took daughter #1, 2.5 yes, to school & headed to an early movie...my prodromal labor had been ongoing for e weeks now, but this morning (before the movie started) the surges were more intense & consistent. After we picked up daughter from school at noon it all went away. By 430 that afternoon they picked up where they left off & by 9 pm I knew it was for real this time. The midwife, however, needed more evidence.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
No challenges for me. I was seeking advice for the burning back pain with each surge. The doula even suggested Tylenol PM at one point so I could get some sleep, but I refused even that. The vomiting during transition was annoying.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Relaxation exercises & birth affirmations. With each surge I went through all the colors of the rainbow to help keep me focused on what my body was going through. I believe having those techniques as part of my daily routine got my brain in the zone more quickly & effectively.

What surprised you about your birth?
The gender..we didn't find out & with it being such a hugely different experience, I anticipated a boy (Chinese gender predictor also said boy, doulas both said boy, got the PUPPS Rrash which is more prevalent with boys). 10 minutes after birth I looked to see & was shocked at what I did see. Dad, on the other hand, said "I told you, I'm a girl maker. I knew all along it was a girl."

It's all a state of mind. Pain subsides & is only temporary. Learn to relax your mind to concentrate on the birth & you won't regret any part of it.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
During the pushing stage I breathed baby out...the burning killed me & just grasping on tightly to whatever was nearby to give me the leverage I needed to concentrate on the breath seemed to help. Staying in my mind & focusing on the birth itself helped me to not think Bouton the pain.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
On my left side with my right leg/foot propped on the midwife's belly to make room for baby.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Amazing...I mean, words can't describe the emotions & the relief from all that "pain" that was experienced makes you even more elated & able to enjoy the moment.
