When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had cramping and non-timetable contractions for two nights, but didn't really know if it was true labor or not. At my appointment with my midwife, I was 5 cm dilated and 90% effaced. I was worried I wouldn't know when I was truly starting active labor, but I didn't need to worry! My water broke at 4 am the next morning and super painful contractions started soon after.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging thing for me was that I didn't get a break between contractions so it was hard to focus on breathing and getting through each contraction. My labor was super fast, but the contractions were right on top of each other and super intense. I almost preferred the longer labor with my first child with breaks between contractions.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I walked a LOT, especially in the last few weeks. Usually I would walk 2-3 miles a day on top of "dance parties" with my daughter every night and bouncing on my exercise ball. Starting around 20 weeks, I drank 1-2 cups of red raspberry leaf tea and was drinking several cups a day the last few weeks of pregnancy. Finally, I had regular chiropractic visits which I really think helped with the speed and ease of labor.

What surprised you about your birth?
I was shocked that my baby came a week early and that my water broke at home. I was also happily surprised at the low-key intervention-free hospital birth I was able to have this time around.

I just kept thinking how huge and solid my baby felt. Overall I just felt relief, love, and amazement.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Breathing exercises helped me a lot, as well as spending some time in the tub. Also I found that I couldn't stay in the same position for long - moving around helped immensely.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I ended up delivering in a squatting position on birthing stool.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
It felt surreal. My labor went so fast I didn't have time to process it. Also I wasn't expecting a 9 lb 12 oz baby, so I just kept thinking how huge and solid my baby felt. Overall I just felt relief, love, and amazement.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Stay as active as you can throughout the pregnancy. Also read tons of birth stories and books about natural labor because it will give you the encouragement to try it. Also, make sure you find care providers who are supportive of your decision.
