When did you realize you were really in labor?
When my water broke at home!
-
What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Patience! Both of my labors have been over 35 hours, with big breaks in between bouts of contractions.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
2 things. 1) Have regular chiropractic care. I have a spinal injury on my sacrum which means I'll always have some back labor. With my first labor it was horrific, but thanks to my chiropractor's regular care this time around, it was much more manageable. 2) my incredible team of midwives and doulas who believed in me and guided me through my labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery in every aspect - from emotional well-being, diet, sleep patterns, and all the ways my pregnancy journey was unique to me.

What surprised you about your birth?
That my transition phase was relaxing, compared to active labor. My body must have known how tired I was from all the stair climbing and earlier parts of active labor. My contractions slowed way down and I could almost sleep between them - until I was SUPER ready to push!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Staying upright (laying down was almost torturous), leaning into the walls with my hands pushing lightly against it. Also, working some with a rebozo to lift my belly.

What position did you end up delivering in?
Hands and knees.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
So triumphant - and so grateful!
