Video Interview With Danielle
-
When did you realize you were really in labor?
This was tricky, I had several instances of prodromal labor for two weeks before the big day. I knew I was in labor when the pain level started to make talking difficult.
-
What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Honestly, knowing when I was truly in labor. My first birth was induced early and this time having to listen to my body about where we might be in the birthing process was challenging to me.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
For sure drinking red raspberry leaf tea since day 1 of the second trimester and starting dates early on week 30. Also walking 30-45min for as much of my pregnancy as possible while listing to faith-based birth meditations, affirmations, prayers, and scripture verses was very helpful as it gave me a new perspective on pain and kept my legs strong. Visualizations such as holding my baby (easier to imagine when it's your second child), breathing calm breaths down to my baby, flowers opening, and imagining my baby wiggling down and out all helped me.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
How quickly it would happen and how much I could enjoy it. Also, a big shocker for me personally was not tearing at all. Working with your contractions and not trying to rush pushing + birthing in water probably helped make that possible.
-
Take care of yourself-- seriously.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Focusing on breathing-- this was hard work because my face wanted to "do the pushing" and I would catch myself not breathing and release and try again and correct myself.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Incredible, he was actually here! I cried at how beautiful the moment was and still tear up thinking about seeing him for the first time.
-
What did you name your baby, and why?
Jordan-- in scripture, the Jordan river symbolizes the freedom that comes after a long season of adversity or trial and his conception came at a time like this in our lives. And it sounded good with our last name.
-
What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Take care of yourself-- seriously. Take naps if you feel tired, keep good oral hygiene, do things (tea, dates, etc), and definitely find affirmations or other like things that build your mental preparation for birth. Also, be stubborn-- that helps too.
