When did you realize you were really in labor?
I was induced at 38 weeks 4 days due to pre-eclampsia. Not at all what I wanted but my doctor was willing to work with me and keep it as natural as possible. We broke my water around 8 am, did nipple stimulation with a breast pump and walked/swayed with some mild contractions starting. We waited 6 hours before starting pitocin at the lowest possible dose. That's when the contractions started to really get in a good pattern and gain strength.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
When we got transition I went from 6 to 10 in about 15 minutes. I could no longer get comfortable in any position and it felt more like an hour and a half to me. The nurses were telling me not to push but I followed my body and ignored them. It was tough getting through that last stretch but I wanted to hold my baby SO bad!

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Read positive birth stories, unassisted stories, physiological birth stories and affirmations constantly.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
Having pre-E and needing assistance. I tried to do a emergency protocol brewers diet, rest as much as possible but in the end I chose to take the advice of my care provider and keep us both safe. This was my 3rd pregnancy so I never imagined a complication might actually interfere with my plan. It was a hard decision for me.

It is a marathon. You can't want to go natural and not prepare. Read birth stories, affirmations, the Birth Partner, Ina May's Guide to Childbirth . . .
Stay focused on the positive. Don't let anyone tell you their negative birth story. Don't let the negative in. You can do this. You were made to do this!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Focused breathing, focusing on just the wave/contraction I was in and not the full length of labor. I can do anything for one minute. My sister counted breaths for me. I could get in 5-6 good deep breaths per contraction so she knew when it was winding down and encouraged me.

What position did you end up delivering in?
Side lying in the bed. I caught her and put her to my chest immediately

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Incredible!!! Words can not express the relief and joy and wonder and love that envelops you in that moment all at once.
