When did you realize you were really in labor?
We were induced at the hospital. The oxytocin began at 6am, the doctor broke my water at 1pm and I started feeling serious contractions around 3pm... at which point I knew there was no turning back!

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Not a lot feels good while in labor, and having to be induced in the hospital I was sad to learn I couldn't really walk around. I was able to get in multiple positions (on a peanut ball, standing, on my knees with my hands on the back of the bed), but I would have preferred more options (laboring in a tub, for example).

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I read the book Mindful Birthing: Training the Mind, Body and Heart for Childbirth and Beyond (by Nancy Bardacke), which I found extremely helpful for delivery and it continues to help me appreciate each moment of each day, even when the going gets tough. Also, as a first time mom, there's so much to learn, and I wanted to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I had multiple e-newsletters (Mama Natural, Fit Pregnancy, Parents, etc) that helped me digest ALL the information little-by-little each day.

What surprised you about your birth?
I've always thought of myself as strong, but I didn't realize how mentally strong I am. I was living and breathing in two minute intervals for a total of 5.5 hours of serious contractions... and I did it! Women are capable and we are strong enough!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Breathing! My husband coached me through breathing techniques we'd learned at our birthing class (provided by the clinic), which held my focus allowing me to fight through the pain.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I delivered sitting between a 90 and 45 degree angle. I didn't think I would, but it was the most comfortable -- giving my legs a break!
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Shocking. I couldn't believe he was here and that I had finally done it!
