Reading Ina May's Book, Listening to Birth Stories And Long Walks Helped Tate During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I woke up at 39w3d with what felt like menstrual cramps. I already had a doctor's appointment that day so I called to ask if I should come early and they said yes. My doctor checked me and I was between 2-3 centimeters! I had to have a stress test done as well due to my belly measuring a few weeks behind. The stress test showed I had five contractions in the twenty minute test so I knew it was the real deal! Thankfully the baby handled the contractions great.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging part of going natural was transition. I didn't know when I was going through transition because I was still at home with my husband only. I had that moment where I thought I couldn't do it anymore and needed to get some pain relief. I thought, if it gets worse than this I can't do this! Little did I know I was so close to meeting my baby!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I did a lot of walking around my neighborhood throughout the pregnancy, and I think the long walks toward the end helped move her down so she came quickly. I also enjoyed reading Ina May's book and listening to lots of birth stories. I tried to educate myself as much as possible about what to expect.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I was super surprised at how quickly I dilated from a four to a ten (1.5 hours!). We barely made it to the hospital to push! I thought it would take hours. I was also caught off guard at how the pushing contractions took over my whole body and forced her out; all I had to do was work with them. They were overpowering in a good way because the helped me bring her into the world. It was a beautiful birth experience!

  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I took two baths and two showers over the course of labor. The water felt great and helped calm me. I also leaned over the birthing ball and rocked back and forth which helped during contractions.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I delivered on my side in the bed. I thought I would want to squat or be on hands and knees, but in the moment I had trouble moving very much because I was so focused on each contraction.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It felt like such a reward and accomplishment after all that labor. I was overwhelmed with awe and love for her. My husband and I shared a special moment just staring at each other and her in joy and wonder. She began nursing right away which was also an amazing moment.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Work hard during pregnancy to have a positive view of your birth instead of contemplating all that could go wrong. Remember "your body is not a lemon!" It knows what to do. Educate yourself (there are tons of resources available to you; take advantage of them), listen to positive birth stories, and walk, walk, walk!
