When did you realize you were really in labor?
I actually was diagnosed with pregnancy-induced hypertension at 38 weeks. They induced me due to symptoms & then had to break my water before true labor began.
-
What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
I had to grieve the idea of a perfect natural childbirth when I realized I would have to be induced. I had read horror stories about the increased pain with inductions. I prayed so hard to be able to stay as natural as possible, and ultimately was able to accomplish this goal! The contractions were intense & staying focused was the hardest part.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I read hundreds of blogs and articles on natural birth, especially in the hospital setting. We hired a doula and attended her natural birthing class. She was the best decision I ever made to prepare me for childbirth!
-
What surprised you about your birth?
The fact that my body could actually grow, labor for hours, and then deliver a tiny human without any outside help. It was incredibly empowering and I am truly amazed.

Read all the positive stories & take the horror stories with a grain of salt. Prepare as much as possible for a natural birth, but understand that things don't always go as expected.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Changing positions frequently, use of a birthing ball, essential oils, massage & counter pressure.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
Lithotomy position just happened naturally and ended up working really well for me.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
I was afraid of how I would (or wouldn't) feel when I held my son. But I experienced an over abundance of love for that sweet boy the moment he was placed in my arms.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Read all the positive stories & take the horror stories with a grain of salt. Prepare as much as possible for a natural birth, but understand that things don't always go as expected. Do NOT feel bad or blame yourself if things change & natural does not happen. A happy & healthy mama and baby are all that matters!!
