When did you realize you were really in labor?
Just like with my first labor, my water broke in the morning. I called the hospital and, due to some conditions I had (Cholestasis and Group B Strep), they said to come in. I took a shower, and finished getting stuff together while my husband took one. We packed up the kids and headed in. My contractions began in the car, about halfway there.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Honestly? Finding the perfect position to be the most "comfortable" in.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I refreshed my memory by reading and watching YouTube videos of births.

What surprised you about your birth?
Needing a cesarean. My labor stalled while there and I was given Pitocin, which I was really hesitant about because it was difficult for me with my first labor. This time it went well, and even though I was 100% effaced, I wasn't progressing past 4 cm. That evening, when my contractions were at their strongest, my daughter's heartbeat would drop to the 80's. The midwife was concerned that her cord was wrapped and that's why she wasn't dropping and I wasn't progressing. Turns out it was something with her placenta, but she's perfect and healthy!

Do it! Don't be afraid, it's what your body is meant to do. And if complications do arise, trust your doctor/OB/midwife and your own intuition.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Mainly grounding. When a contraction came on, I would hold either my husband's or my best friend's hands while the other person would hold and press my hips and low back. Having them there helped me keep my focus and not give in to exhaustion or fear. I would also take deep breaths and moan loudly.

What position did you end up delivering in?
On my back on a surgical table.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Fantastic! I was in recovery for about two hours, so once I was wheeled into my room I took her to try to and nurse her. I was stoked when she immediately latched on (which is my picture).

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Do it! Don't be afraid, it's what your body is meant to do. And if complications do arise, trust your doctor/OB/midwife and your own intuition.
