When did you realize you were really in labor?
Earlier in the day on Saturday I had become more uncomfortable and noticed that I was slowly losing my mucus plug. I was having contractions but nothing regular.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
My own fear was the most challenging thing. I had been so worried and was overthinking all of the things that could possibly go wrong. I should have had more confidence in my bodies ability to give birth. I was also more comfortable laboring on my side so when it got time to push I was afraid to turn over into another position. I feared that burning feeling of the baby crowning.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
This was my fifth natural birth and for some reason I was the most afraid and anxious for the this birth as well. I read up a lot on hypnobirthing for this birth. I read up on thinking of positive things as well as ways to breathe to manage the pain. I also tried to walk and labor at home as much as I could.

What surprised you about your birth?
I was shocked at how quick my birth was. My contractions woke me up in the night and I progressed so quickly that I almost didn't make it to the hospital.

The advice I would give is to have confidence in your body. You need to be flexible and let nature take its course, but the woman's body is amazing and without doubt and worry clouding your thoughts things can and will progress smoothly.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
For me warm water from the shower as well as walking around helped me the most. I also found that when I was breathing right and trying to think of happy things like the beach the pain was more manageable.

What position did you end up delivering in?
I ended up delivering on my back after laboring on my side initially. I arrived at the hospital with a bulging bag and dilated to a ten so once I turned to my back, one push and baby was out.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
I can't even explain the joy and relief that I felt to hold my sweet baby for the first time. I was so proud to have gotten her out and so happy to see that she was healthy and well. It's really the most magical time. This was a rainbow baby for me as I suffered a hard miscarriage the year before, so I felt a healing power in holding my sweet girl. My heart was healed a little bit.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
The advice I would give is to have confidence in your body. You need to be flexible and let nature take its course, but the woman's body is amazing and without doubt and worry clouding your thoughts things can and will progress smoothly. Also if things don't go to plan that's ok too. A healthy mom and baby is the most important part. Flexibility with your plan and trying to relax and breathe are the most important things that we can do as birthing mothers.
