When did you realize you were really in labor?
My water broke at 4:30 in the morning... We went to the birth center about 9 and I was 7 cm dilated, and that's when I knew it was game on!

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Truthfully, going natural for me is the least challenging option. Recovery, and the possible unknowns from an epidural or medication are harder for me than labor, so despite the pain of labor, I would always prefer to be in control!

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I had everything ready to go at home, so when I went into labor I didn't have to worry or scramble... I was able to relax and know that my return home wouldn't be stressful.

What surprised you about your birth?
My son was stubborn! His head got stuck, so what should have been a frantic, hurry up before he is delivered in the parking lot situation turned into an all day to do. Once his head popped past my cervix he was here in minutes. My 1st child was delivered within hours of arriving at the hospital and I was not even in active labor with her... I expected this time to be hours sooner!

Go for it! Being in control of your labor and delivery is absolutely the best and most empowering feeling. It feels like such an accomplishment.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
I did not really use any strategies... I am lucky enough not to feel contractions until minutes before time to push... In the 45 minutes of painful contractions I just kind of paused and breathed through it.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I delivered on my back with my legs pulled up, propped up against my husband for leverage.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Amazing! I was overwhelmed with how perfect he was, and knew that he completed our family of 5.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Go for it! Being in control of your labor and delivery is absolutely the best and most empowering feeling. It feels like such an accomplishment.
