When did you realize you were really in labor?
My contractions started to get more regular in the evening as I was getting ready for bed. By 11pm I knew I was probably in labor.
-
What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Every birth is unique. You might have a fast birth with one child and a longer birth the next time. Going with the flow and letting your body do what it needs to on its own time table can be difficult.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I took a 12 week Bradley Method Natural Childbirth course when I was pregnant with my first baby. I have used the workbook and the techniques for all three of my births.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
My labor with my third baby took much longer than the other two had. I was so greatful for my birth team who kept encouraging me when I felt depleted. Also this baby girl wound up being smaller at birth than her older brother and sister!

You have to prepare mentally, physically, and emotionally. Know that unexpected things can happen, but having a healthy low risk pregnancy can increase your chances of having a safe natural birth. You can do this. You were made to do this. It will be one of the most empowering moments of your life!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Dim lighting, music playlist with encouraging lyrics, lots of swaying, squatting, walking, cool washcloth, also time laboring in warm water.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I was reclined in the birth pool, but then needed to rotate quickly to a squatted position so the midwife could assist with the final push.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Such a relief. Total joy. Overflowing love. Each child is a miracle and a blessing from God. I am in awe of the whole process from conception to birth.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Know your options. Know the risks of the various interventions out there. Educate yourself on natural birth techniques (hyponobirth, bradley, etc). You wouldn't expect to run a marathon without training for it; childbirth is the same. You have to prepare mentally, physically, and emotionally. Know that unexpected things can happen, but having a healthy low risk pregnancy can increase your chances of having a safe natural birth. You can do this. You were made to do this. It will be one of the most empowering moments of your life!
