Preparing Mentally And Reading Ina Mae's Guide To Childbirth Helped Caley Achieve Her First Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I didn't know for sure that my labor was really going strong until I felt baby's head crowning!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Nothing ended up being challenging about going natural because, if I had tried to get to a hospital I would have given birth in the car!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I think preparing mentally far in advance, reading Ina Mae's Guide to Childbirth, not putting my pregnancy out there (on social media) for all to comment on, and not being anxious/consistently telling myself how great I'm gonna do really set me up. Validating that mind/body connection!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

My labor only lasted 2 hours 45 minutes and it was my first!

  • If you want to go natural, I would say only read positive birth stories, read and watch things that normalize natural birth and get you excited about it, and tell yourself you can do it! As often as you think about it!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Yelling lol and focusing on timing my contractions.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I delivered and caught my baby I'm a semi squatting/kneeling position.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    Unreal.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

If you want to go natural, I would say only read positive birth stories, read and watch things that normalize natural birth and get you excited about it, and tell yourself you can do it! As often as you think about it!
