Practicing How To Be Calm Helped Hannah During Her Birth Center Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

My partner and I were watching a movie and I got up to go to the bathroom and my water broke all over the carpet.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Because she is my first baby it was so hard not knowing how everything was going to feel. You're told your entire life how awful childbirth is so it's definitely intimidating.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Not letting myself get stuck in a negative mindset. Reminding myself every single day that I could do it. It's not enough to tell yourself once, you have to practice being calm.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How insanely fast it was! Being in transition labor was overwhelming at times but it made the experience from start to finish only 6.5 hours and to me it only felt like two.

  • I couldn't believe how fat and hairy she was! I was so relieved and proud that I did it, I was beyond tears.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Breathe. Breathe and try your best to get into the zone. Don't be afraid, and don't worry if you lose control, just bring yourself back down and start again.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Leaning on my back in the tub with my feet propped up on some handles. I labored on all fours the entire time so I was surprised I ended up that way!

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

I couldn't believe how fat and hairy she was! I was so relieved and proud that I did it, I was beyond tears.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Do not let anybody bring you down or make you feel weird about your birth choice. Find "the zone" and get it done, girl!
