Practicing Her Relaxation Techniques Helped Heidi During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

It was Saturday evening around 5:30pm. I had been experiencing mild contractions that afternoon but when my husband and I went on a walk that evening, I had to stop to work through them and we both realized that it was the real thing.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing about going natural was having the contractions get stronger and not knowing how many more I had to go through.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

The most helpful thing I did to prepare was practice my relaxation techniques.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

It surprised me that I was actually able to get through It without medication. I had wanted to be able to do that since my last two births had interventions. I am very proud of myself!

  • Be prepared! Set your mind to it. If you go it just to "see how it goes" you most likely won't make it.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Being in the water, moving during a contraction and releasing all tension.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

On my back but only because I ended up in the OR and didn't have a choice as they were almost ready to perform a C-section because of a dropping heart rate.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Indescribable!! We had just learned that it was a girl and we had hoped for a girl so deeply because we already have 3 boys!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Be prepared! Set your mind to it. If you go it just to "see how it goes" you most likely won't make it. Being in a birthing center it is much more likely that you will make it because you won't have anyone suggesting interventions.
