When did you realize you were really in labor?
After being 8 days past my original due date, my doctor did a membrane sweep. This actually put me into labor naturally; and it probably was not until the following morning around 3am did I realize my body was in labor. It was a much different experience and feeling then my first birthing experience.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
This natural birth was unexpected, as I really was not planning for it. I began labor in the late evening/early morning when everyone else was asleep so I was able to concentrate on my body and manage the pain. The hardest part was probably the drive to the hospital, when my pain level from the contractions was nearing a 10.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Educate myself. There is so much information available online now, that it's very easy to get overwhelmed. Once I came across the MammaNatural YouTube Channel, I was hooked.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
Compared to my first birthing experience which was a scheduled induction with pitocin, epidural, etc. I found this natural birthing experience even less painful during the pushing and it was much easier to recover since I was not pumped full of drugs. I was walking to the restroom within minutes of the birth.

Targeted breathing, a hot shower, and a birthing ball. Laboring when it was nighttime allowed me to keep the room dark, and focus on my breathing.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Targeted breathing, a hot shower, and a birthing ball. Plus I think laboring when it was nighttime allowed me to keep the room dark, and focus on my breathing.

What position did you end up delivering in?
Considering that I walked into the hospital at 10cm, I barely had time to get my pants off and on the table to push. I didn't have to try any different positions rather than the typically on-your-back hospital position.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Amazing. I felt completely in the moment, and present. Finally, thankful for this precious gift.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Labor at home, as long as possible (if you are planning to go to a birthing center or hospital for delivery). Being in the comfort of my home allowed me to better manage my pain and increase my focus. And listen to your body, trust your body. I "knew" when it was time to go, we ended up delivering within 30 minutes of getting to the hospital.
