What position did you end up delivering in?
It was Thursday, March 12, 2015. Julia was scheduled to be induced the next morning, per the doctor’s orders, to avoid any issues with her having the baby outside of the hospital, considering how quickly brother Keegan’s birth transpired. Daddy was at work finishing things up before taking time off for the arrival of the new bundle of joy. Mommy spent the morning and early afternoon cleaning the house, preparing for the hospital and running errands (SAMs and Keegan's haircut) with Mimi. Throughout the day, Mommy felt little discomforts, but nothing she thought had to do with being in labor. Little did she know, these were contractions!! Silly mommy, those are supposed to hurt! Anyway, Mommy dropped Mimi off at home around 2:30 pm so Mimi and G could go to Lansing to shop and dine; or, so they thought. When mommy got home she laid brother Keegan down for a nap and then began to think she should take her little pains more seriously. Mommy called her doctor at 3:44pm. Doc explained that she was having contractions, quite frequently, actually, and that she needed to get to the hospital hours ago.
Mommy, in her typical nonchalant fashion, asked the doc if it would be alright for her to wait for Daddy to get home from work, as it would only take 45 minutes, before they headed to the hospital; Doc, hesitantly, agreed. So, mommy called daddy at 3:57 pm and told him to get his bottom back home ASAP! Daddy had his marching orders and headed mommy’s way. After talking to Daddy, Mommy called Brenda to see if she could watch brother; she didn’t answer so Mommy called Mimi to see who she thought might be able to help. It took multiple other calls before mommy could find someone who was willing to spend any time alone with brother. Jan Lord was the brave sole who agreed to take on the tall order. In the meantime, Daddy called Mommy at 4:04 pm to tell her he was on his way, and then again at 4:14 pm to talk about what he needed in his hospital bag. Daddy hung up the phone with Mommy at 4:22pm. Mommy then called Mimi and during their conversation, Mommy realized things were escalating pretty quickly and she needed to push! NOW!
In an effort to slow things down, Mimi advised Mommy that she didn’t need to push and that everything was alright. Mommy insisted that it was time and that she wasn’t going to make it to any hospital! Mommy then told Mimi that she felt the head….Mimi insisted, “that is not the head, sweetie; that is just pressure!” WRONG, it was the head! One hiccup later and we had a boy!! Of course, Daddy was oblivious to everything happening back home; that is, until Mommy called him at 4:33pm. Daddy was just pulling up to the intersection of Linden and Calkins, right around the corner from home. When he answered Mommy’s call, he heard a baby crying the background. Daddy’s initial thought was that Mommy was playing a trick on him, but Mommy’s tone indicated otherwise. “Adam, I just had our son!” With those six words, Daddy’s heart sunk, his blood pressure skyrocketed and his mind began to race. Mommy told daddy that G and Mimi had called 911, that Jan and the EMS were on their way and that her and baby were fine. Of course, Mommy had no idea if they were fine or not, but she was improvising. At that point, that is really all she could do.
After hanging up the phone with Daddy, Mommy welcomed Jan into the bathroom/delivery room and then took a call from the EMS, who was quite surprised to be talking with Mommy and not a bystander. Seconds later, Daddy arrived on scene to find Mommy and Jan and baby just hanging out in the bathroom. No big deal! Then Daddy noticed the EMS was pulling in and met 3 panicked young men at the front door. Given their appearances, Daddy was surprised any of them were old enough to drive, let alone provide emergency medical assistance. When they got upstairs their expressions went from that of concern, to relief! “That baby looks great!” one replied, “I’d say he’s every bit of a 9!” (out of 10 on the Apgar), said another. One of the EMS boys then cut the cord (it had to have been his first) while the others worked on situating Mommy on a mobile gurney so they could get to the ambulance. During all of the bathroom chaos, daddy was greeting police officers who had come to check out the action. What a scene! 3 EMS workers, 2 Cops, 1 Jan, 1 Mommy, 1 Daddy and a Kason all hanging out in the master suite. How do you spell party?! Well, Mommy, Daddy and Kason eventually made their way into the ambulance, but not before Mommy gave the ‘ol full moon salute to the neighbor across the street who had come over to make sure everything was alright; butt, I digress! While the ambulance was pulling out of the driveway, G’s mom, Joyce, showed up and Daddy instructed her to make her way into the house, but we had to go! By this point, Kason was already having a tasty meal, wondering what all the fuss was about!
We made our way to McLaren, and, once there, the nurses made quick work of getting Mommy into a room; one nurse asked Mommy if she had her insurance card to which Mommy replied, “Sorry, no, I don’t even have my pants!” Daddy was busy giving information to the EMS boys so they could get on their way. Once we were all safe and sound in the hospital room, the nurses began to do all the necessary procedures on Kason, including warming him up after having to brave the brisk March air, and Mommy’s midwife and a doctor worked on making sure Mommy was alright. Everything was great; everyone was healthy! Praise the Lord! Meanwhile, Mimi and G and Grandma and Grandpa waited anxiously to get into the room and meet the new “little speedster!” They got their chance a few minutes later. All the while, Jan was back at the delivery room (aka Mommy’s bathroom) cleaning up the evidence and taking care of brother. What a lifesaver she was! After hanging out at the hospital for about 36 hours, Kason, Mommy and Daddy got to come BACK home!
