Birth Stories

Lavender Oil Helped Ricci Relax During Her Labor

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had to be induced. I was almost at 42 weeks and my baby boy's heartrate was dropping with my pre-labor contractions so my natural birth plans had to be set aside. Fortunately labor began with only one medical intervention and it was a slow build of contractions, not instant like what I heard could happen. I was told by my midwife that labor is real when you cannot walk or talk during a contraction. This is how I knew things were really starting.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing for me was not having a natural birth. I was flexible from the beginning but knew the best birth for me was a natural one. But we had to do what was best for my son, and he was born healthy and that is the most important part. I still sometimes feel guilty that it is somehow my fault that I did not go into labor on my own but I remind myself that this was my first birth and these types of things cannot always be explained or avoided.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I learned everything I could about the whole physical process. I read books and stories, watched YouTube videos of births, and asked friends and family to give me all the details, ALL the details. This may be the worst thing for some pregnant mothers but I felt more comfortable going into it knowing what could happen. The other thing that helped, which may be more approachable for all, is that in the last month of my pregnancy I took a relaxing bath with lavender oil every night. Then when I was laboring in the hospital I was able to do the same, the scent helped me feel more relaxed and at home.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I was surprised by my strength. Almost two days of labor followed by three hours of pushing and I did it! I cannot think of any other time in my life where my whole body was so fully utilized. Oh, and then how every muscle in body ached afterwards, like I had run a marathon with little to no training.

  • Know what you are comfortable with and what you are not comfortable with, know what you want and base decisions on those wants. Always have you heart engaged in the process!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Soaking in the tub was the best!

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I was close to a sitting position while pulling myself up on a bar. I think engaging my arms help me push through the contractions.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

I read this question and tears filled my eyes. I don't know that it is a feeling I can describe; it was somewhere in between relief, joy, and disbelief.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

I think the best thing is to know yourself. Know what you are comfortable with and what you are not comfortable with, know what you want and base decisions on those wants. Always have you heart engaged in the process!
