Knowing What She Wanted for Her Birth Helped Carrie During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

Unfortunately I had to be induced at 40 weeks because our little guy's heart wasn't tolerating even the smallest contractions. So I was given cervidil Friday evening which didn't really help me progress. So then I was put on pitocin all day and into the evening Saturday. Which also did little to help me progress. So my midwife decided to give us both a break in hopes my body would take over, over night. However it did not. So i was put back on pitocin Sunday morning and contractions really got going. Especially after my water broke about 11:30 or so. That's when i knew this show was on the road!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

With this most likely bring my 3rd and last baby I knew I wanted to go natural and with being induced I was really fearful of the "cascade of interventions" that often lead to a c-section. Thankfully my midwife was was in no rush for this baby to be born and c section was her very last resort.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Knowing what I wanted for my birth, surrounding myself with people who supported me, and being knowledgeable about hospital policies really helped me prepare myself. Also switching from an Obgyn to a midwife was the best decision I ever made!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

My birth definitely didn't go as planned, AT ALL! Unfortunately when my water broke we found meconium. So because of that I didn't get the delayed cord clamping, rubbing in the vernix, or warning on my chest. I saw him for a few quick seconds then he was whisked away to get cleaned up. So that was a shock. But a positive surprise was how fast I transitioned. I went from 7cm to 10cm in 19 minutes! And when it was time to push my body just took over and hecwas born within seconds!

  • Make sure that whether you choose an Obgyn or Midwife, they support your choice to go natural. Also having a supportive partner (s) is important.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I never thought the breathing techniques I learned in my birthing class would be helpful. But they were!!! I also used worship music and prayer to keep me focused and keep fear away.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I was reclined back on my back. I had just come off the toilet and he started coming out so I was kinda rushed to get to the bed anyway I could!

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Total shock! I just couldn't believe he came so quickly and was here! There was also this feeling of pride that I DID IT!!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Make sure that whether you choose an Obgyn or Midwife, they support your choice to go natural. Also having a supportive partner (s) is important. My husband and bff were amazing. But most of all know YOU CAN DO IT! Your body was made for this, and you can do hard things!
