Knowing What Kind of Childbirth She Really Wanted Helped Santana Achieve Her Natural Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I called my Midwife around 5:30 telling I was having what I thought was contractions. She told me I would know when I was in active labor because I would not be able to talk through them and try to relax until then. Around 7:30 pm I had a few really bad contractions and my water broke.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The most challenging thing for me was the not knowing. Not knowing how long I would have contractions or how long I would be pushing etc.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

The most helpful thing I did to prepare myself for Childbirth was research what actually happens and what kind of childbirth I really wanted.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

What surprised me about it was how calming of a experience it can be if you prepare yourself, environment and birth team for it. I had my boyfriend, midwife and her assistant at my house when I was giving birth. I only pushed for two hours and we were laughing and making jokes most of the night.

  • The most challenging thing for me was the not knowing. Not knowing how long I would have contractions or how long I would be pushing etc.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

The strategy that worked best for me when it came to pain was just accepting it and keeping the purpose of this whole thing in my mind (my son)

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I started out with a water birth but at about 9cm dilated decided to go on the living room floor on my back grabbing my knees for support.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

When I held my Son for the first time I felt complete and it is true what they say in that moment all the pain leaves your body.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

The advice I would give to the mamas who want to go natural is just accept the pain it will be over soon. What really helped me to was not to even have medication as a option. It was not there incase I wanted it etc. I was never asked if I wanted medication, it was pain that would be over soon. Also if you end up having complications and need medication that is OK too. You are doing what is best for your child and you.
