Knowing the Basics of What to Expect Helped Megan During Her Birth Center Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I had been having inconsistent contractions all day and had an appointment with my midwife st 4pm, at which time she told me I was 3cm and could have the baby any time. I didn't think it was going to happen any time soon because I was only 39+4 and my first babe was 3 days late. I drove home and by 5:30 the contractions had increased in intensity and were closer together, so I started thinking "hey, maybe this is it!". Babe was born only 3.5 hours later!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

I truly love natural birth. I think it is the most empowering thing a woman can do. This time the biggest challenge was the timing. I was sure that I was in for another long labor (first was over 21 hours). Second babe had other plans- active labor was about 3 hours and I was in total disbelief that things were moving so quickly. He was in my arms 1 hour after arriving at our birth center.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Knowing the basics of what to expect helped a lot. Because I had a previous natural birth I was already prepared with pain management and coping strategies that I had to learn the first time. I think feeling relaxed and "normal" and breathing through my contractions helped things move along quickly and efficiently.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

Labor seemed so short this time! I was having contractions technically for about 22 hours, but because they were inconsistent at first I went to work. I taught all day, which kept me distracted, so by the time active labor began it didn't really seem like I had been laboring all day.

  • Go for it! Our bodies were made for this. Remember that there are different kinds of pain- the pain you feel during labor is your body working to birth your baby. Listen to your body and enjoy the experience.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Leaning forward while breathing slowly out of my mouth really helped with most of my labor. The last hour was spent in the tub, which helped to slow my transition.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I was on my back in a birthing tub with my legs on the wall of the tub.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Amazing. I was so shocked to have birthed him so quickly that it almost felt unreal.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
