When did you realize you were really in labor?
I woke up at 6:25am with the first contraction (that I felt). I checked the time and then 'slept' until the next one and checked the time - it was 6:35am. I sat up in bed and felt the next one start in my back and move to the front.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most difficult part of going natural (in the sense of no drugs or interventions) was actually the comments and looks from other people before the baby was born.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Read lots of natural birth stories and info. Knew my facts, discussed with the midwives. I had snacks and such on hand but labour was too quick and I was too nauseous if I tried to eat or drink. I just kept telling myself that this was going to be 1 day out of 9 months and the rest of the baby's life - I could do it!

What surprised you about your birth?
How fast it occurred, and how painful the ring of fire actually was. I also expected to have the moment of 'I love this child with my whole being' but it never happened like that for me. I grew to love her over the next few days and coming weeks but I did not have the 'ah-ha' moment.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Distraction, zoning out, warm pool of water
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I was squatted in the birth pool between my husband's legs when I finally gave birth.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
It felt like I was holding a baby - no real attachment right at the beginning. She was cute, but I didn't have an instant bond with her. I was so happy it was all over with and that there was no more waiting for labour to begin.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Read lots, take all info with a grain of salt and remember that our bodies are made to do this. Vaginas do open and babies do come out.
