Birth Stories

Joelle's Caesarean Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

40 weeks and 4 days my typical nightly Braxton Hicks were 15 min apart and I could not sleep through them, due to pressure and pain localized in my lower cervix area. Thus most likely being in all hopes of having a "natural" birth.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Finding out at 38 weeks my baby was Frank Breech. My husband and I went on project flip baby every Natural way possible. Chiro Webster technique, smoking my feet with Moxa, head stands and inversions. And finally Dr attempt to flip but nothing worked and I was facing a dr recommend Cesarean at 40 weeks. I could not make peace with them cutting my baby out just because I was 40 weeks people go to 42 or more and baby's flip all the time even in labor. We packed up went into Cesarean appointment at 40 weeks and 3 days but left hospital no surgery because I had hope for natural. They warned me with breech baby the would not deliver natural and it would be best to not be in full on labor if I had the Cesarean. 24 hours later the contractions started and I surrendered to accepting the Cesarean was going to be. At 9 am with needles in my back and a request of A gentle Cesarean I was laying on a table not quite at peace but ready for my baby in my arms soon. Then as I watched in a mirror my body cut open and Dr reach into get baby with a struggle he had to cut and open me more. Then out came Lincoln Dean. As my wish was to have him on my chest as soon as possible, but when the entire surgery room gasped at the size of baby that just came out of me I requested to my doula to have them way him as my husband was with baby. At 11lbs 4oz and a 15 3/4 head I had peace, I thanked the good Lord and my baby for what must have been best for all of us.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I think my faith and knowing that it is all a preference but we have no control over a "plan" only God does. I could have gone to more weeks in hopes baby would flip but then I very well could have ended up with a 13lb or more baby and an old placenta that would have compromised my encapsulation and tinctur.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

Never did I think there was more than a healthy 7-9 lb baby I was blessed with a healthy comfortable pregnancy and then the surprise of my little giant is here.

  • Do your best to trust your self and only do what feels right to you.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

I refused pain meds percaset after day 1 and only took minimal Tylenol and ibuprofen. Iced my incision instead of drugs.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    Cesarean

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Like the best gift in the world un describable Love

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Do your best to trust your self and only do what feels right to you. A part of me may think if I had known earlier like 35 weeks that baby was breech I could have gotten him to flip, so missing out on dr visit monitoring because of the natural midwife program I was in to late was to late. But you can find peace no matter what happens when you have the live of that baby healthy safe on your arms. Neither I nor baby Lincoln had or have diabetes he is just big love.
