When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had been experiencing intense but infrequent prodromal contractions and on and off in the previous two weeks, as well as nearly constant Braxton Hicks. When I lost my mucus plug, followed by my water breaking 20 minutes later, I knew the contractions were the start of labor.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Transition is always the most challenging part of natural labor - it's like being near the summit of the mountain or really steep hill, but not being sure if you can make it the remaining short distance.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Hire a Doula! Even with lots of other preparation, having a Doula at each of my births was indispensable for the birth experience.

What surprised you about your birth?
How exhausting prodromal labor can be, and how important it is to have good support during it.
-
Train and prepare, surround yourself with good support, but let go of any expectations for how the birth will unfold.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Breathing exercises from The Pink Kit, non-focused awareness meditation from Birthing from Within, counter pressure performed by my doula.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
Sideways lying.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
A great relief after the intense effort of birthing.
-
What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Train and prepare, surround yourself with good support, but let go of any expectations for how the birth will unfold.
