When did you realize you were really in labor?
I thought I had started labor earlier in the day and I started keeping track of contractions. The contractions slowed down when I was sitting or laying so I wasn’t sure if it was real labor. I was positive I was in labor when active labor started and my contractions were 4 minutes apart. We went to the hospital at 5 am, I was 5 cm dilated and the baby came 4 hours later.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging thing about going natural was not being afraid of the pain and all the things that could happen. My delivery was pretty painful even though I only pushed for 30 minutes.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I just tried to stay positive and believe my body could handle the birth. I used a midwife group this second time and it made all the difference. The midwives were so encouraging and affirming of my decision to have the baby naturally during my prenatal appointments and during labor. I also read books about breathing through contractions and picturing the cervix opening.

What surprised you about your birth?
It happened pretty fast! I was so much more relaxed this second time breathing through the contractions and not running from the pain. I think staying calm helped my labor progress much quicker.

If you want to go natural, look for a supportive midwife group, birthing center or doula to encourage you way before birth. Breathe through the contractions and don’t be afraid of them.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Mentally picturing the cervix opening with each contraction helped immensely. Laboring in the birth tub was very relaxing and I fell asleep in between contractions. My husband and midwife were very supportive and encouraging.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
First I used the birth bar, sitting up then I laid down and held my legs back.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Unbelievable! I couldn’t believe he was there laying on my chest. I was also relieved the pushing was over. He was 9 pounds and we later found out he had fractured his clavicle so it was a tight squeeze.
