When did you realize you were really in labor?
I was informed that morning during a follow up with the OB that I was 3 cm dilated. My contractions were coming with more frequency and intensity throughout the day and I knew come nightfall that true labor was officially underway when I needed to begin breathing through the contractions and could no longer find a comfortable sitting position.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
I experienced back labor just as I did with my first child's birth. By the time I became open and interested in pain medication it was too late! I was 8 cm. I had to keep trudging the natural path and I am so glad I did!

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I communicated clearly with my husband about my wishes and hopes for the birthing process. While I wasn't able to labor in the tub or focus on selected meditation music, I was able to experience a very present and loving partner who knew how important the natural process was to me. He would remind me of this and reassure me that 'this too shall pass' and at the end of the pain our miracle would arrive.

What surprised you about your birth?
I was amazed that my body knew exactly what to do and when! I dilated 1-2 cm every hour and when it was time to push, my body began pushing. Looking back, I feel a great sense of pride and awe! What a miracle birthing is!

The moment my baby was placed on my chest and I could feel his little body pressed against mine I began to cry tears of gratitude! I was overwhelmed with love for this being.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
My husband applied counter pressure to my lower back with each contraction. This helped tremendously. In fact it was the Only thing that seemed to bring any relief! The birthing ball, changing positions & yoga only seemed an annoyance at the time.

What position did you end up delivering in?
I delivered in the hospital bed on my back.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
The moment my baby was placed on my chest and I could feel his little body pressed against mine I began to cry tears of gratitude! I was overwhelmed with love for this being.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
While it may feel like an impossible task, women's bodies are programmed to bring life into the world. Its hard to believe or trust that our bodies will know how to carry us and baby through the process, but it will! Armed with natural tools like music, meditation and support, you can endure so much more than you think you can knowing that the greatest gift, the gift of life, is just on the other side of the experience!
