When did you realize you were really in labor?
As soon as my water broke. Before that I had just cooked a beautiful breakfast and had some tolerable but firm contractions. I went to use the restroom and my water broke. It immediately took me to my knees and my contractions started strong and consistent lasting 45 seconds and 1.5-2 min apart. I immediately had my labor song.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Having back labor, the intensity of my contractions so quickly without any build-up, and the hospital staff saying they were concerned baby was too big and that I'd probably have a shoulder dystocia that would end in a c-section.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I mentally prepared myself for a big baby and knew how important it was to just listen to my body. I knew when it was time to go to hospital, to push, to change positions. Having my doula and husband know what it was I wanted allowed them to Aid me in my desires and during contractions.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
I had a precipitous labor which means very fast, from start to finish around 3 hours. Once my water broke for me labor started and it lasted 3 hours. It was incredibly intense, but once I transitioned and felt the urge to push it felt incredible.

Hire a doula. Have a great birth system. Educate yourself on the hospitals and interventions especially if you happen to be high risk.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
I had a lot of back labor so counter pressure on my lower back. Also being on all fours on my birth ball or standing up and swaying during contractions.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I was laying on my side with one leg up in a stirrup.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Absolutley amazing. She was so attentive and calm. Latched immediately. Three weeks later still extremely calm and content

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Hire a doula. Have a great birth system. Educate yourself on the hospitals and interventions especially if you happen to be high risk. I was type 2 diabetic and baby was measuring large, also I am a plus size woman. Know your rights and that you can decline things and to follow your gut. Emotionally prepare yourself.
