When did you realize you were really in labor?
I started to feel funny after I had lunch on Friday the 22nd. I couldn’t put my finger on exactly what was going on but I just felt like I needed to go get checked at the hospital. I called my Dr's office and they agreed. Once I got to the hospital I was having decently strong contractions but they told me that unless my contractions were so strong I couldn’t walk or talk through them then I was probably still in pre-labor. I wasn’t. And they finally agreed to admit me.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Transition contractions were definitely the most challenging. Thankfully I had an amazing doula! I had known it was going to be difficult having my daughter and I wasn’t sure about the pain but my doula helped with counter pressure and reminding me to breathe and move into whatever position I wanted to be in.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
The most helpful thing was probably having a doula. She helped me research what I wanted and make a plan that I felt in control of. With my first baby I felt very out of control and it was traumatic for me but with this delivery I knew exactly what I wanted and I wasn’t going to settle.

What surprised you about your birth?
I had such an amazing recovery. My midwife worked hard making sure I didn’t tear and need repairs like I did after my first birth. I didn’t need to use the “padscicles” in the hospital, nor did I need numbing spray. I felt like I had a birth experience and it was wonderful. Bringing my daughter into the world and knowing I was in control the whole time was empowering! I wasn’t scared, I felt confident with my decisions and that could have only happened because I felt so supported by my doula, midwife and husband.

Stand your ground and don’t let people make you feel like you can’t do it. Having a baby doesn’t have to be scary!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Counter pressure!! My souls stood behind me while I was in a kneeling position on the dropped down bed. I’d push against her legs with my feet while she would squeeze my hips and even used her head in the middle of my back to apply pressure. I had the worst back labor.. it hurt worse than anything else!
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I was on my back but sitting up and was able to reach down and pull my daughter out!
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
I don’t know if words could describe the feeling of pulling my daughter up and laying her on my chest. I was relieved, thrilled and almost relaxed. I felt like I didn’t have to worry, she was here and I could breathe and just look at that sweet baby face.
