When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had a membrane sweep at my appointment that morning. After dinner, I started needing to focus and my husband had to take care of the toddlers' bedtime routine.
-
What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
I had a little bit of back labor due to baby's position. I had to keep reminding myself that all the pain and pressure was going to end with the birth of my son.
-
What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Since I was attempting a natural VBAC, I spent a lot of time reviewing the phases of labor as well as researching VBAC. I also used a doula this time, so it was nice to have the extra support.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
I was surprised at how hard it was to resist the urge to push and to slow down during the pushing phase. I ended up tearing, but I was so grateful for a successful VBAC!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
I tend to manage the pain pretty well, but the most helpful thing was to have almost continuous counter pressure on my back.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
I felt so relieved that he was here safe! And so relieved that it was time to rest.
-
What did you name your baby, and why?
Prefer not to answer.
