Going to Birthing Classes and Keeping Herself Hydrated Helped Ashley Achieve a Natural Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

    I didn't realize I was in labor until I got to the hospital to be checked since I was leaking fluids I had no contractions at that point so I was thinking they'd send me home. I didn't start having contractions until I was at the hospital for about 2 hours.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

    The most challenging thing about going natural was to remember to breathe. If you can remember to do that or have your partner remind you, we all can do it.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

    I think the most helpful thing I did to prepare was to go to the birthing classes and keeping myself hydrated.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

    I was surprised that by the time I was thinking of having an epidural I was already at 9.5cm and ready to push. Once I started pushing, I no longer felt any pain.

  • It felt so unreal. I couldn't believe I was finally holding her. She was so cute and cuddled right up to me. It was the best feeling in the world.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

    I gripped the bed rails with each coming contraction and focused on my breathing.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    I ended up delivery on my back holding my legs up by my head.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    It felt so unreal. I couldn't believe I was finally holding her. She was so cute and cuddled right up to me. It was the best feeling in the world.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

    I used the birth class from the hospital which also leaned toward natural birth if of course your labor would allow it.
