When did you realize you were really in labor?
I woke up around 3 AM with minor cramping that was about 20 minutes apart. They continued to gain strength and became closer together. I knew after an hour or so it was the real deal.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
I would say my only challenge was "the ring of fire", at that point I was reconsidering my choice. Having had an epidural with my previous birth, I know there is great pain with medication anyway!

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I walked. I stayed home and cleaned for as long as I could, and while at the birth center I walked until I couldn't take a step between contractions. I think it really helped!
-
What surprised you about your birth?
The sense of pride. Nothing in my life has ever brought me such immense joy and a feeling of achievement. Having a baby is truly a miracle- birthing naturally is an incredibly amazing experience, a gift and I am grateful to have had the strength to endure it! :)

Have a doula or midwife. As supportive as your partner or spouse may be they probably aren't trained in this.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Essential oils! Black pepper along with a nice massage was my favorite. I also used clary sage and orange oils in the tub and I found the orange to be an uplifting distraction.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
On my hands and knees. It was what I wanted to do based on research and was by far the most comfortable.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Like my heart grew ten or twenty times. It's the sweetest feeling. Pure love.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Have a doula or midwife. As supportive as your partner or spouse may be they probably aren't trained in this. Let someone who has experience be by your side too. It can be a blessing.
