When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had been having inconsistent contractions for a couple days. On Friday (5/19) afternoon they started to become more consistent. I called my midwife & she told me to rest. My husband & I decided to go to my Acupuncture appointment later that day. On the way there, I told my husband to turn around and head towards the hospital. I felt a sense of urgency, and that I needed to head to the hospital (an hour away!) immediately.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Well I'm not sure I did everything all "natural" as I got an epidural when I was about 8 cm dilated. I did obtain my VBAC which was the most important thing to me! It was challenging to stay positive & not think about all the things that *could* go wrong.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Research! Research everything. Even though this was my second baby, it was my first boy. My husband and I talked a lot about circumsion & the pros & cons of having it done. We ultimately decided to keep our son intact. Also, switching providers halfway through my pregnancy was helpful. I don't think I would of got my VBAC if I had stayed with the traditional OB who was vbac tolerant but not vbac friendly.

What surprised you about your birth?
My midwife used olive oil while supporting my perineum during the pushing phase! This was to reduce the chances of tearing.
