Educating Herself on Hypnobirthing and Making a Birth Plan Helped Terry During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

One hour after I drank a castor oil smoothy and had violent vomiting followed by severe pain in my lower back.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

The combo of unstoppable vomiting, with back labor. I labored for 7 hours at home and then went to the hospital because I was dehydrated and needed an IV.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Educate myself on hypnobirthing and making a birth plan that both my Doulas (my two sisters) knew because when I was rushed to the hospital, there was no time to give the nurses and doctor my print out.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

That I dilated 8cm on my own at my home and probably would of been able to have the full birth naturally, had I not been vomiting the entire time. I was surprised that I could handle the labor the way I did.

  • I was in tears especially when he sniffed himself to my nipple and latched on like a champ!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Birthing ball, and circular like an infinity movement on my lower back. And then deep pressure on my take bone.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Emergency cesarean section because the umbilical cord was slowing down my. Annie's heart.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Ecstatic! I was in tears especially when he sniffed himself to my nipple and latched on like a champ!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Have a midwife that knows how to administer an IV, if you have lots of vomiting to prevent dehydration and replenish you with water and energy!
